A native of Albany, John Stephenson graduated with a Bachelors of Arts magna cum laude from Vanderbilt University in 1981, and with honors from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1984, where he was a member of the Georgia Law Review. John joined Watson Spence as a litigation associate in 1984, and became a partner in the firm in 1989. Today, he holds memberships in the State Bar of Georgia, the Dougherty Circuit Bar Association, the Defense Research Institute, and he formerly served on the Board of Directors of the Younger Lawyers Division of the State Bar. John is the President of the Dougherty Circuit Bar Association for 2010-2011. John has a litigation and workers' compensation practice, and represents insurance carriers and their clients, common carriers, counties and municipalities and their employees, and various businesses and individuals in federal court and state courts throughout Southwest Georgia and before the Georgia State Board of Workers' Compensation. In addition, John has been the lead counsel in the defense of numerous tort cases involving catastrophic injury or death, and also has acted as the lead counsel in numerous cases involving allegations of violation of various state and federal statutes, including civil rights claims. John's extensive trial experience includes preparing and arguing pre-trial motions, deposing numerous expert witnesses in a variety of fields, conducting jury and bench trials as lead counsel, and defending appeals in the Georgia Court of Appeals, the Georgia Supreme Court, and the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

Personally and through his firm association, John has represented both large and small clients, such as The Procter & Gamble Paper Products Company, Auto-Owners Insurance Company, Trident Insurance Services, ACE-USA, Golden Peanut Company, Toys 'R'Us, and USF Holland Trucking Company. Active in community service, John is a former president of the Southwest Georgia Easter Seal Society. He has served on the boards of Goodwill Industries and the Albany Symphony Association, and is an alumnus of Leadership Albany. John is the President of the Dougherty Circuit Bar Association for 2010-2011. John is married to Judge Nancy S. Stephenson of the Probate Court of Dougherty County. The Stephensons have two adult sons attending UGA and attend the First United Methodist Church in Albany.
